Virginia Vera Michalik

Virginia Vera Schroeder Michalik, age 88, of Granger peacefully passed away on Monday, August 26, 2019, in the loving care of St. David’s Georgetown Hospital.

Virginia was born at John’s Community Hospital in Taylor on July 11, 1931, to Willie Louis and Bessie Lee Schroeder of Round Rock.

She graduated from Round Rock High School in 1948 and then attended Durham Business School in Austin. She married Edward Eugene Michalik from Granger on August 29, 1948, at Palm Valley Lutheran Church in Round Rock.

Virginia met Edward at a co-ed softball game at Round Rock High School. They were playing on opposing teams. She laughingly would say “I hit a ball so hard that it nearly knocked Edward’s head off. I definitely got his attention and made him take notice.” That was the beginning of a 70 year loving relationship in which they experienced good times and hard times with an abundance of love and blessings.

Virginia began her working career as a secretary for the Austin Public Schools. After the family moved to Granger in 1951, she was a stay at home mother until becoming a substitute teacher for the Granger Public Schools in the 1960’s.  She especially enjoyed substituting for the agriculture classes because of her experiences growing up on the family farm in Round Rock. In the 1970’s she accepted the position of Federal Programs Director for the Granger Public Schools and continued in this position until she retired in the mid-90’s.

She was an active member and very close to her church family at the First United Methodist Church in Granger for over 60 years.

Virginia was very dedicated to her family and loved cooking for them. She especially enjoyed whipping up a delicious banquet for the family on holidays and special occasions. She also enjoyed cooking for her friends and her church family. Virginia was an exceptional seamstress who custom designed clothes for her family and friends. Another of her passions was tending to her flowers and vegetable garden. She loved canning her vegetables and fruit. She taught herself how to knit and crochet and her specialty was knitting baby blankets, caps and scarves.

Family was very important to Virginia. She loved them dearly and held them close. She was a very dedicated and amazing grandmother and great-grandmother. Virginia was the rock of her family until the very end.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents Willie Louis Schroeder and Bessie Lee Hall Schroeder and her grandson Ryan Eugene Grace. Survivors include her husband Edward Eugene Michalik, children; Beverley Ann Grace and husband Craig of Taylor, Patricia Lynn Polasek and husband Gilbert of Granger and Leslie Eugene Michalik and wife Teri of Granger; brother; Kenneth Schroede of Round Rock, Texas, sister; Florence Finn of Taylor, Texas,  grandchildren Darryl Wayne Polasek (Amanda) of Thornton, Brian Wayne Polasek (Meggan) of Granbury, Jenna Lynn Barbiaux (Wade) of Granger, Daniel Eugene Michalik (Tiffany) of Granger, Chelsey Ann Ellison (Jeramy) of Granger; great-grandchildren Madison Grace Aranda of Hutto, Peyton Morning and Paisley Kay Polasek of Thornton, Ilene Ree and Bella Grace Polasek of Granbury, Jessi Lynn and Kennoa Jean Barbiaux of Granger; Brody Lane, Aspyn Faith and Gracelyn Ivy Michalik of Granger; Ryker Kane and Keaton Kai Eugene Ellison of Granger.

Pallbearers include Gary Schroeder, Darryl Polasek, Brian Polasek, Daniel Michalik, Wade Barbiaux and Jeramy Ellison.

Honorary pallbearers include Craig Grace and Gilbert Polasek.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 3, from 6-8 pm and services Wednesday, September 4, at 10 am at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. Graveside services will follow immediately at the Taylor City Cemetery. Reception will be held at the Granger Brethren Church Fellowship Hall.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Fields, Dr. Dekarety and Dr. Mangat, all of her nurses and the entire staff at St. David’s Georgetown Hospital for their compassionate, loving and exceptional care of our wife and mother.
