Velmetta Mitchell

Velmetta Haynes Mitchell, 83, of Thorndale, TX passed away on Saturday, June 5, 2021.

"Nita", her preferred nickname, was born on March 7, 1938 in the Liberty Hill community, near Rockdale, TX.  She was the second-born child of Carl James Haynes and Lilia Bell Washington.  At an early age, her parents moved the family to Amarillo, TX. She and her siblings returned to the Liberty Hill community and were raised by their grandmother, Annie Johnson.  Nita loved and admired Mama Annie.

Nita was united in Holy Matrimony to Willie Howard Mitchell and to this union, five children were born: Jean Calvin, LaVida Huff, James Howard Mitchell, Reggie Mitchell, and Felix Mitchell.

Nita accepted Christ at an early age.  She loved talking about church with family and friends.  She also loved Gospel music. Two of her favorite musicians were Mahalia Jackson and Lee Williams.

Nita was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Willie Mitchell, son James Howard Mitchell, daughter LaVida Huff, brothers Hubert Haynes and Roosevelt Haynes, sisters Annie Bell Kuykendall and Rose Bowers-Carr.

Left to cherish her memories are daughter, Jean Calvin of Taylor, TX; son, Reggie Mitchell (Gwen) of Austin, TX; son, Felix Mitchell (Deneene) of Bellevue, NE; sister, Willie Bell Watson of Lubbock, TX; sister, Ola Hastings (Jimmy) of Slaton, TX; seven grandchildren, LaTasha Calvin, Tyrone Mitchell, Trent Mitchell, Ross Mitchell, Cherrell Hunt, Chernell Huff, and Ashley Mitchell. She also leaves nine great grandchildren, nine great-great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.

Due to social distancing, limited seating will be available at the service.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 11, 2021 at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor.

Funeral service to celebrate Velmetta's life will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Providence Funeral Home

Burial will follow at the Taylor City Cemetery.
