Sylvia Ann Ponton Slagle, 84, of Taylor, passed away peacefully, October 30, 2020, at home with family. She was born February 6, 1936, 8 miles west of Rockdale in Milam County, Texas, to Tilmon and Annie (Preuss) Ponton.
Sylvia graduated from Taylor High School in 1954 and married the love of her life, Leon Slagle, in 1956. She was employed at First Taylor National Bank for 34 years, later worked at Farm Bureau until her grandson was born and then “retired” to take precious care of him.
Sylvia was the last of the original founding members of Vernon Street Christian Church still attending services in what is now known as Northview Christian Church. She taught Sunday School for many years and donated her talents by decorating the fellowship hall for every season. She enjoyed her membership in the Taylor Garden Club and New Century Club. She also loved oil painting, doing various arts and crafts, being outdoors tending to her plants, family get-togethers, keeping Leon busy with various projects, and traveling with family and friends to all 50 states and Canada.
Sylvia was predeceased by her parents, husband, and sister-in-law Nancy Slagle. She is survived by her daughter, Melodie (Delony) Rieger and husband Jason; grandson, Jared Delony; brother, Ray Ponton (Margaret); sister-in-law, Mary Bigon (John); brothers-in-law, Kenneth Slagle, Jr. and Richard Slagle (Lolita); numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and her loving cat Delilah.
Celebration of life will be held at 2pm on Thursday, November 5 at Providence Funeral Home followed by burial in the Taylor City Cemetery. Due to social distancing there will be seating on every other pew. Masks are required in the funeral home and at the cemetery.
Pallbearers are Rodney Bohls, Cameron Bohls, Jared Delony, Michael Konderla, Burt Moncrief and Jason Rieger.
The family would also like to express their appreciation to all the staff at Standards Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of Sylvia.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northview Christian Church, P.O. Box 1031, Taylor, Tx. 76574.
