Steven N. Scruggs

February 9, 1950 – November 6, 2017

Steven N. Scruggs was born in Taylor, Texas on February 9, 1950 to Hollis and Helen Werchan Scruggs. A lifelong resident of Taylor, he graduated Taylor High School in 1968 and Southwest Texas State in 1972 with a degree in Business-Marketing.  When he was a young boy, he was proud to serve as a page boy for the Texas State House of Representatives in Austin.  Upon college graduation, he worked at Block Distributing first as a salesman, and then as an Area Supervisor.  Steven founded City Produce in Austin, San Antonio, Harlingen, and Corpus Christi and successfully grew his business over the years.  City Produce was the pride of his life’s work.

Steven was a wonderful husband and father, a great “Pa” to his grandchildren, a loving brother and uncle, and a best friend to many.  He loved all sports, especially the sporting events of his grandchildren and nieces and nephews.  For decades, he attended the Texas High School State Basketball Championships, bringing friends and family along with him over the years.  Steven enjoyed tennis, golfing, and any backyard sport he could play.  He was very talented in tending his tropical flowers and his newly acquired love for cattle ranching.

Steven loved spending time with his family at the coast, the lake, and at the ranch. His wife, children, and grandchildren were the loves of his life, and he was very proud of all of them.  Steven was also especially proud of his father, who survived as a POW of the Bataan Death March and earned the Purple Heart and many other service awards.

Steven enjoyed life immensely, and shared that joy with everyone he met.

Steven is survived by his wife of 41 years, Cheryl Zimmerhanzel Scruggs, daughter and son in law Stacy and Jeff Stork of Taylor, son and daughter in law Scott and Nicole Degan Scruggs of Georgetown, and grandchildren Dylan Stork and fiancée Lauryn Batot, Garrett Stork, Cole Scruggs, and Kinsley Scruggs.  He is also survived by his mother, Helen, brothers Allen Scruggs of Taylor, Farrell and Kathy Scruggs of Huntsville, mother in law Beatrice Zimmerhanzel of Taylor, brother-and sister in law Paul, Jr. (Pete) and Jaime Zimmerhanzel of Taylor, and numerous nieces and nephews. Steven is preceded in death by his father, Hollis, and father in law Paul Zimmerhanzel, Sr.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening 5-7 pm, November 8 and celebration of life service will be held Thursday morning, November 9 at 11:00 am. All services at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor.  Burial will follow at the Taylor City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Taylor, Taylor Relay for Life, or the Salvation Army Taylor Service Unit.
