Ruth Irene Nickel

On August 20, 2018, Ruth Irene Nickel, age 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep at University Village Assisted Living and Memory Care in Round Rock, Texas.  Before moving to the care facility she lived her entire life in the Coupland, Texas area.

Ruth was born on December 30, 1928 to Ewald and Mary (Rieger) Beyer.  She was baptized on March 31, 1929 at St. Peter’s Evangelical Church in Coupland and she was one of 26 young adults confirmed in May 1942.  This was the largest confirmation class ever confirmed in the Coupland church.  On June 16, 1950 she married Elton Nickel in the same church and the remained married until his death 53 years later on July 7, 2003.

Ruth worked for years at Fashions of Texas, a clothing factory in Taylor, and then worked in the Taylor Middle School Cafeteria for 15 years before retiring back to the farm east of Coupland where she and Elton lived and worked.  She worked side by side with him from sun up to sun down and still made time to cook hot meals for the family and do all the other household chores.  She always had made from scratch deserts on hand to share with friends and neighbors who might stop by.  She always had a large garden and canned fruits and vegetables for the family to enjoy year round.

Her two main hobbies were polka dancing and playing 42 dominos.  She and Elton played 42 with Don and Lois Schmidt every other Sunday night for years.  After retiring she joined the Coupland Area 42 Club.  The ladies in the community met at each other’s homes once a month for an afternoon of dominos and fellowship.

Ruth is survived by two sons, Larry Nickel of LaGrange and Dennis Nickel of Austin, grand children Lance Nickel of College Station and Sarah Nickel of Kyle, one great-granddaughter Chloe, one sister Alice Schernik and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by husband Elton Nickel and parents Ewald and Mary Beyer.

The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at University Village Assisted Living and Memory Care in Round Rock for the years of compassionate care they provided.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 from 6 to 8 pm at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor Texas.  Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 23, 2018 at 2:00 pm at St. Peter’s Church in Coupland Texas with burial immediately following the services at St. Peter’s cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the St. Peter’s Church Cemetery Fund or charity of your choice.
