Robert Eugene Garrett

Robert Eugene (Gene) Garrett, age 81, of Taylor, Texas passed away on Friday, October 11, 2019 at home. Gene was born on July 18, 1938 to Robert James Garrett and Christine Annie (Schneider) Garrett of Thorndale, Texas.  He was a graduate of Hutto High School and served in the Army National Guard.  Gene was a loving husband and happily married to his wife and best friend, Carolyn Jane Kaderka, for almost thirty-five years.

Gene had a life-long career as a farmer, farming many acres of land throughout the Taylor area.  He farmed crops of cotton, corn, and maize and raised cattle.  Gene was hard-working and a perfectionist with his crops, receiving honors including “Master Farmer” and “Outstanding Conservation Farmer” from the Taylor Soil & Conservation District.

Gene loved watching football and spent countless years supporting the Taylor Ducks and traveling to watch the Baylor Bears.  Many family gatherings involved watching college football and Dallas Cowboys games.  Gene had a strong passion for music and loved attending polka festivals and dances.  He created many memories of family vacations to destinations across the United States and later experienced memorable travels to countries in Europe including Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic.

Gene was a believer in Christ and encouraged a life of faith to his family. Family was very important to Gene. He was an encourager and cared about them dearly. He was overjoyed and proud of their many accomplishments. He was very dedicated to his family and loved celebrating with them. Gene was a concerned father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Christine Garrett, and son, Robert Craig Garrett.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Garrett; children, Stephen Garrett and wife Paula of Taylor, Chris Garrett and wife Erica of Lakehills, Clement Strmiska and wife Sandy of Bartlett, Michele Stabeno and husband Kent of Taylor, Melissa Filla and Philip Strother of Houston, Suzanne Weems and husband Daryl of Waco; sister, Irene Walton and husband Roy of Hutto; a niece, a nephew, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers include grandsons, Patrick Garrett, Hunter Garrett, David Stabeno, Garrison Filla, Benjamin Strmiska, and Whitten Weems.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 from 5-7 pm at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at 10 am at the Taylor City Cemetery.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at Scott & White Dialysis Center in Round Rock and Scott & White hospitals for their years of quality care provided.
