Leon Eugene Slagle, 86, of Taylor, passed away Friday, June 1, 2018 at home.
Leon was born January 22, 1932 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Kenneth and Agnes (VanderMeyden) Slagle. Being part of a military family, he witnessed the bombing of Pearl Harbor at 9 years of age. He graduated from Taylor High School in 1950, was drafted into the Army, served in Korea in the Field Artillery Radar Section, attained the rand of Sergeant, received the Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze stars, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. Upon returning from the war, he married the love of his life, Sylvia Ponton, in 1956.
Leon worked for East End Lumber Company and then for John Deere Bigon Implement Co. He was the first Kiwanis Club member in Taylor to achieve 50 years of service, a founding member of both the Black Land Riding club and Northview Christian Church, where he served as Chairman of the Board for over 50 years. He was able to participate in an Honor Flight to Washington DC and was chosen with 3 other veterans to lay the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Leon is survived by his wife of almost 62 years; daughter, Melodie (Delony) Rieger (Jason); grandson, Jared Delony; siblings, Mary Bigon (John), Kenneth Slagle, Jr., Richard Slagle (Lolita) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 7 th from 5-7 PM. Celebration of Life will be Friday, June 8 th , both at Providence Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Taylor City Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Jimmy Bigon, John Bigon, Jr., Camreron Bohls, Rodney Bohls, Erik Brewer, Walter Brewer, Jared Delony, Michael Konderla, Burt Moncrief and Jason Rieger.
