DEACON LEON D. NICKERSON, “COACH NICK”, OF TAYLOR, TEXAS, PASSED PEACEFULLY, AT HIS HOME ON SUNDAY, APRIL 29TH, AT THE AGE OF 84.
BORN TO CARRIE B. (CHEATHAM) AND OLLIE G. NICKERSON IN ROBSTOWN TEXAS, THE FAMILY SOON RELOCATED TO CORPUS CHRISTI, WHERE HE ATTENDED SOLOMON COLE HIGH SCHOOL AND BEGAN FUFILLING HIS DESTINY AS ONE OF THE STATE’S MOST OUTSTANDING ATHLETES. HIS ACHIEVEMENTS LED TO SCHOLARSHIP OFFERS FROM UNIVERSITIES ACROSS THE NATION. IN ORDER TO REMAIN CLOSE TO FAMILY, HE CHOSE TO ATTEND HIS BELOVED PRAIRIE VIEW A & M UNIVERSITY, WHERE HE CONTINUED HIS TRADITION OF ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE AS A PLAYER AND STUDENT COACH. DURING THIS TIME, HE ALSO HONORABLY SERVED HIS COUNTRY IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY.
UPON GRADUATION FROM COLLEGE, HE IMMEDIATELY BEGAN HIS DEDICATED CAREER TO EDUCATION AND ATHLETIC ENRICHMENT FOR OVER 28 YEARS, WITHIN THE BASTROP, TAYLOR, AUSTIN AND PFLUGERVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICTS.
HE WAS A CHRISTIAN MAN WHO LOVED GOD AND HIS FAMILY DEARLY AND SERVED FAITHFULLY AS A DEACON AND MALE CHORUS CHOIR MEMBER AT ZION CHAPEL MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH IN TAYLOR FOR OVER 20 YEARS.
COACH WILL BE REMEMBERED MOST FOR HIS LOVE OF GOLF, PEOPLE, SPORTS AND THE MANY LIVES HE POSITIVELY INFLUENCED DURING HIS LIFETIME.
HIS MEMORY WILL BE CHERISHED BY HIS WIFE, BOBBIE V. (EDWARDS), CHILDREN, CARLA (WILLLIS), JUSTIN AND DANITA; SIX GRANDCHILDREN, FOUR GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN AND A HOST OF OTHER FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH (2500 MALLARD LANE, TAYLOR, TX), SATURDAY, MAY 5, 2018 AT 1:00 PM, WITH INTERMENT AT THE TAYLOR CITY CEMETERY.
THE VIEWING WILL BE HELD ONE HOUR PRIOR TO THE SERVICE.
