Kermit Wallace Sakewitz

Kermit Wallace Sakewitz, 88, of Taylor passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 with his family by his side.

Kermit was born May 18, 1932 in New Sweden, Texas to Alice (Krueger) & August Sakewitz. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1948 and began working in the oil fields of Texas. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and playing sports. It wasn’t long before he signed his first pro baseball contract with the Brewton Millers. Then in 1953 at the age of 21, Kermit was drafted into the United States Army where he served for 2 years. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to playing baseball briefly before breaking his ankle, ending his career. At this point, he took a job with the State of Texas in the Highway Dept. that lasted 37 years. Kermit married his wife, Betty Czimskey, in 1957 and they soon began raising a family of 4 children. He was a member of the American Legion, Graham D. Luhn Post 39 in Taylor where he served as Commander and on the Honor Guard, the Taylor Volunteer Fire Dept., and the Rio Grande Yellow Catters fishing club. He umpired and watched countless baseball games, participated in many BBQ and chili cookoffs, which kept him very active and busy. But he always found time to take the family camping and fishing on the Brushy Creek, or deer hunting on Key Ranch. Later in life, Kermit would spend hours doing crossword puzzles and mounting deer horns. Most of all, Kermit loved his wife Betty, his family, friends, and the Lord.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Alice Sakewitz; brothers, Gus, Jr., Sonny, Kenneth, William, and Harry.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Betty; daughter, Kim Sakewitz of Thorndale; sons, Brian Sakewitz of Taylor, Kirby Sakewitz & Andrea Cuba of Taylor, Clay & Wendy Sakewitz of Taylor, and Steve & Pamela Lawhon of Taylor; grandchildren, Lacie Sladek & Jose Aleman, Coty Stone, Carter & Haley Sakewitz, Cullen Sakewitz & Destiny Fogolini, Sarah Sakewitz, Evan Sakewitz, Eric Brooks, Dawson Brooks, Keragan Brooks, Braeden Lawhon, and Maisen & Ian Rucker; great grandchildren, Eliana, Nathan &  Jeremiah Aleman, Charlee & twins Emery & Avery Stone and Casen Jewett; sister, Alice “Pug” Matetzschk of Coupland; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at Providence Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 401 W 7th St. in Taylor. Burial will follow at Taylor City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Carter Sakewitz, Cullen Sakewitz, Evan Sakewitz, Eric Brooks, Dawson Brooks, and Braeden Lawhon. Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Matetzschk, Craig Matetzschk, Kenny Sakewitz, and the Key Ranch Deer Hunters.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Kermit Sakewitz Memorial Fund at City National Bank of Taylor.
