Karen was born on December 21, 1951 in Granger, Texas, to Louis and Sallie Cervenka. She grew up with her older brother, Richard. She attended SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic School in Granger and graduated from Granger High School. On November 21, 1970, she married the boy down the street, Gilbert Mayer. Shortly after their first daughter was born, they moved to Taylor and have resided there ever since. She cared for many children through her home daycare for nearly ten years. Later Karen became affectionately known as ‘the chicken lady’ while working the drive-thru window at Golden Chick in Taylor. She was also well known for selling vegetables at the local farmers markets, assisted living facilities, and elsewhere around town. Karen made friends wherever she went. She was always happy to see you and greeted you with a smile. She proudly shared stories about her children and grandchildren. She loved animals and adored her chihuahuas Zinnia, Ginger, Sir Chadwick, and Sophia.
