Johnny Carey Muyres, age 97, of Taylor, went home to be with the Lord and join his wife, Helen, in eternal rest on March 9th, 2023.
Johnny was born on July 10, 1925, to Joseph N. and Theresia (Liebhaber) Muyres in Bay, Arkansas. Johnny graduated from Nettleton High School in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
He was employed by Shell Oil Company, where he was a supervisor in the Refinery Quality Control Lab in Deer Park, Texas. Johnny worked for Shell for over 39 years until he retired in 1984.
He married the love of his life, Helen Licka of Granger, Texas on June 18, 1949. Together they would travel to over 25 states across the US in their Recreational Vehicle. They were happily married for 61 years until Helen’s passing in April of 2010.
Johnny was a member of SPJST Granger Lodge #20. He was involved in two different RV Clubs. Johnny was also an avid bowler.
Johnny served as Elector Chairman and Eucharist Minister for over 25 years at three different Catholic churches in the Houston area. He also served as the Chairman of C.C.D. at St. Augustin church in Houston. Johnny had a strong Catholic faith which made him the perfect role model for being a Godfather and Confirmation sponsor, which he was to many and was very proud of it.
Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Helen, brothers James and Benno Muyres, sister Margaret Burton, and many nieces and nephews. He is survived by several cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor, Texas on Thursday, March 16th from 5-6pm. Rosary will be recited at 6pm. Funeral services will be at St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Taylor on Friday, March 17 th at 10am. Burial will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Granger, Texas
Serving as Pallbearers are Brad Schodek, Calvin Janak Jr., Hayden Wagner, Mark Schodek, Phillip Wagner, and Shelton Gilmore. Honorary Pallbearers are Emil Licka, James Wagner, Ross Schodek, and Terry Hilbig.
Memorial contributions may be made in Johnny’s honor to the C.C.E. Education Fund at St Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Taylor, Texas.
The family wishes to thank all the medical staff professionals and administration of SPJST Skilled Nursing Home and Assisted Living.
