James Wallace Robbins passed away in Taylor, Texas, on January 15, 2018. He was a faithful Christian all of his life, being a member of the Church of Christ, first at Hyde Park in Austin and recently, at the Highway 95 congregation in Taylor.
James was born in Killeen, Texas on September 20, 1924, to James Hobart and Edith Blanche Hall Robbins, the eldest of seven children. He grew up in Central Texas moving from farm to farm where his father found work and his mother was a housewife. He often attended small rural schools. He never was married and was inducted into the military at the age of 19 during World War II. He entered the Medical Corps in the United States Army and served in hospitals in England, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg. After returning to the United States, he soon joined the family and eventually moved with the family to Killeen, Texas, following the death of his father in 1948.
In Killeen, he sold insurance for a while, then moved to Austin where he obtained work in the health field at the State Hospital. He retired from the Texas State School for Mental Health and Mental Retardation after many years of service. He was an avid Amateur Radio operator, being active in local radio clubs in Travis and Williamson Counties with the call sign N5OUJ. He often referred to his call sign as “Old Uncle James” and was known by that name by his buddies. He also participated in the central Texas Sky Warn program.
James was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Felton T. Robbins, Ralph Edwin Robbins, and Allard Robbins and is survived by one brother and two sisters, Dalton O. Robbins and wife Pat of Lewisville, Alma Ford of Hutto, and Fay Caballero of Dallas. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Hwy. 95 Church of Christ, Cherokee Childrens Home, or local Amateur Radio Clubs.
Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. Friday, January 19, 2017 at the Hwy. 95 Church of Christ in Taylor. Funeral service will follow at 10:00 a.m. Graveside service will be at 12:30 p.m. at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville.
