Helen Stiba Polzin, 96, of Coupland, Texas passed peacefully Thursday, November 4, 2021, at The Cottages in Round Rock, Texas.
Helen was born on February 7, 1925 to the late George and Bridget Sawey Stiba of Rice’s Crossing, Texas. She attended Rice’s Crossing School and later Coupland School, where she was a cheerleader and the salutatorian of the class of 1942. Upon graduation she relocated to Austin, attending two years of Business College and going on to work at the Texas Public Service Company. On July 6th, 1947, she married the love of her life, Allen Polzin.
The young couple planted their roots in the small community of Coupland, buying a farm south of town and building a home, on “the hill”. She and Allen had two children, Judy and Janet.
Their time in Coupland was spent cattle ranching, farming, raising their children. They frequently entertained their friends and family behind their house, under their shed frying fish or grilling burgers.
Helen and Allen also owned and operated a beer joint in downtown Coupland; a place where the local farmers would gather after a long day spent working the fields. After their children were grown, the two provided the sausage to The Old Coupland Inn.
Helen was a member of St. Peter’s Church serving on the church council as treasurer. The church played an important role in her life and she almost never missed a Sunday service. Through the church, she made life-long friends, some of whom would join her every month at their 42-domino club, where she was an active member for over sixty years.
In addition to dominoes, Helen enjoyed playing scat with her family especially during the large holiday gatherings. She was an avid tennis fan and hardly ever missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune.
For her grandsons, nothing beat spending time with “Gran”. Whether it was helping Gran pick the garden, taking a walk with her around the farm to see the wildflowers, or coming in from playing on the tractor to a root beer float. Gran made childhood very special for her boys.
In her later years, Helen’s little black and brown dachshund, Phoebe, kept her company and never left her side.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband of over fifty years, and sisters Elnora & Annie Stiba, Marjorie Weber, Eileen Howard, brother-in-law Pat, and sister-in-law Julia Stiba.
Helen will lovingly be remembered by her two daughters, Janet Doss and husband Bill, and Judy Polzin. She is also survived by her brother, George Stiba; grandchildren, Lance (Angie) Haag, Brad Haag, Adam (Ashley) Doss, Jacob (Brynne) Doss and great-grandchildren, Bailey Haag, Javier and Diego Haag, Harper and Daxon Doss, Rhett Doss, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would especially like to express their deepest appreciation to Mary Jane and the staff at The Cottages for their care and support over the past two years.
Visitation and funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 9th, at St. Peter’s Church in Coupland, Texas. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Charles Stark officiating. Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers are her grandsons, Lance Haag, Brad Haag, Adam Doss, and Jacob Doss along with nephews, Greg Kaiser and Mark Weber.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Church in Coupland.
