Don Jay Schmidt passed away at his home surrounded by his family and his favorite Chihuahua named Peanut, who faithfully sat in his lap, on December 15th, 2019.
Don was born at Johns Hospital in Taylor on March 7 th , 1939 to Fritz & Mathilda (Tesmer) Schmidt. He graduated from Taylor High School in 1957. One of Don’s favorite joys was watching his two grandsons play Duck Football and Duck Baseball. He was a retired farmer and rancher of 42 years. He was a long-time member of St. Peter’s Church in Coupland where he served on the church council for three years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Arlene (Paul) Kruse.
Don is survived by the love of his life, Lois Schmidt of 54 years; daughter Carrie (Michael); two grandsons Wyatt Jay (Katelyn) and Jake M.J. Townsend; nieces Pam (Mike) David and Cindy (Joe) Tomei; nephews Mark (Ramona) Kruse and Brian (Shannon) Kruse; several great nephews and great nieces; sister and brother-in-law Ken and Elnora McDonald and Roy and Nikki Barth.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Providence Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at St. Peter’s Church in Coupland. Burial will follow at Taylor City Cemetery.
We would like to thank Dr. Meghan Khan and the Diffusion Department Staff at Scott & White Cancer Center in Round Rock for all their care. Special thanks to Dennis Nickle, his godson, for all his help in getting Don to appointments when help was needed. Also, to Austin Hospice for all their care during his illness. May he Rest in Peace.
