Christina Slattery Wendlandt

Christina Slattery Wendlandt, 73, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, November 8th, 2023. Christina was a resident of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, and recently of Taylor, TX, where she finished her earthly pilgrimage in the loving company of her children and grandchildren.

Christina was born on September 14th, 1951, in Albany, New York, to John Richard Slattery II and Helene (Campion) Slattery. The sixth and youngest child, Christina grew up with two older sisters and one older brother. Her first two brothers both died as infants. She attended Maria College in Albany, Plattsburgh State University in Plattsburgh, and Russell Sage College in Troy, New York. Chris began teaching in Lansingburgh Central Schools inTroy and finished her 26-year career as a beloved teacher in the Platte County R3 School District in Platte City, Missouri.

Christina was a bright, fiery Irish woman who blessed others with her encouragement, compassion, conviction and humor. She had many loves: her family and friends, her students, the NY Giants, golf, her Irish heritage, and the US Air Force. These loves were surpassed only by her fierce devotion to her husband, Lt. Col. Richard T. Wendlandt; her children and grandchildren; and her Catholic faith. Chris found strength in the Divine Mercy devotion to persevere in her sufferings with COPD until her final surrender to Love Himself.

Christina is predeceased by her husband and parents; her brothers Andrew, John, and Richard; and her sister Mary Lou Zaferakis. She is survived by her son, John O’Brien and his fiance Cristina Restrepo; her daughter Kate (O’Brien) and her husband Aaron Barta; her grandchildren Kolbe, Mercy, Joseph, Hosea, Norah, Bosco, Daniel and Marietta Barta; her sister, Anne Slattery; her niece, Lisa Zaferakis; and her nephews, Andrew Zaferakis and Stephen Slattery.
