Glenn Mcvey

July 24, 1938 — March 11, 2022

Charles Glenn McVey, 83, of Georgetown, Texas went to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday, March 11, 2022.

Glenn was born on July 24, 1938, in Anadarko, Oklahoma, to Charles and Elsie McVey.  He grew up with younger sister, Doris and younger brother, Max.  As the big brother, he offered his siblings guidance and support, particularly regarding mischief-making.

Glenn graduated from Anadarko High School in 1956 and attended the University of Oklahoma, earning a degree in Civil Engineering.  He was active in the ROTC during high school and college and served in the National Guard.  One weekend, while home from college, Glenn met Evelyn Shearrer, who became the love of his life.  They married in 1958 on Thanksgiving Day, and moved to married student housing in Norman, where their first child, Barbara, was born.

After college graduation, Glenn was employed by the Federal Highway Administration (F.H.A.).  Moving from state to state as an engineer trainee, the family grew with the birth of Laura in Tennessee and Charles Jr. (Chuck) in Arkansas.  The family settled in Austin in 1965 before moving to a small farm in Georgetown in 1973.

Glenn worked for the FHA for 30 years, taking early retirement on a Friday before beginning a new career with the Texas Highway Department (TXDOT) the following Monday.  At TXDOT, he trained many young engineers and enjoyed his public role as a liaison with the Austin City Council.  An early riser and lifelong afternoon napper, TXDOT approved a cover for Glenn’s office skylight to provide a suitable napping environment.  After his second retirement, he worked as a consultant in the private sector.

For Glenn, faith and family always came first.  He and Evelyn raised their children in the Christian faith and he served for many years as deacon and Sunday School teacher at Main Street Baptist Church in Georgetown.  He loved attending his grand and great-grandchildren’s sporting events and artistic performances.  As teenager and later as an adult, he had a love for hot rods and racing, which he instilled in his son Chuck.  Glenn was a lifelong Oklahoma Sooner fan and devoted many hours to family genealogy.

Glenn and Evelyn’s marriage of 63 years demonstrated the power of devotion, love, and mutual respect.  Anyone who knew them knew that they were best friends.  They were an anchor for their expanding family and circle of close friends.  They aided those in need and, when you were in their presence, you knew that you came first.  Glenn was always available, when asked, to give honest, caring, and wise counsel.

Glenn loved hunting and especially fishing.  He and Evelyn traveled to Colorado every summer, setting up camp in their travel trailer for many months, escaping the Texas heat.  They had an ongoing amicable trout-fishing competition between them.  True to form, Glenn made many friends in their favorite campgrounds.

Glenn is survived by his wife Evelyn and their three children and their spouses: Barbara and Darrell Agnew, Laura and Gary Shipman and Chuck and Suzanna McVey.  They have ten grandchildren: Trent Agnew and his wife Cori, Brad Agnew and wife Morgan, Todd Agnew and wife, Elizabeth, Kelsey Agnew and Jordi Shipman, Kadi (Shipman) and husband Cade Dyal, Marci Shipman, Alan Shipman, and Patrick and Sawyer McVey.  They have five great grandchildren: Graham, Bennett, Parker, Pearl and Archer Agnew.  He is also survived by 9 nieces and nephews.
