Cary was born on January 14, 1954, in Taylor, to his parents, Zigmund and Agnes Prikryl, and he grew up on the farm. He attended St. Mary's Elementary School and graduated from Taylor High School in 1972. During high school, he worked at Raesz's Grocery and HEB.
After high school, Cary worked at Taylor Builders Supply for many years. There he learned all about the construction trades and sold and delivered lumber and other construction supplies all over our area--including Austin when it was just becoming "weird" and driving there was fun. He made many friends at TBS not only with fellow employees but with many customers, and he developed a "just ask Cary--he'll know what you need" reputation.
After Taylor Builders Supply closed, he went to work at Moss True Value Hardware, and his "just ask Cary" reputation followed him. He worked there for 25 years until he retired in July, 2023. Cary made many friends throughout his life, but especially during all those years working with people involved in the building trades and home maintenance.
He loved little kids, dogs, good barbecue, Lions Club Fundraiser Chili, and being on any creek, river, or lake. He loved to fish, to barbecue and smoke meats, and he grew incredible vegetable gardens. Unfortunately, his mobility problems ended these activities in his later life. He loved to recall events from his childhood and tell stories he had heard from and about his dad and his uncles from when they were growing up on Willis Creek. He also liked to hear others tell their treasured stories. He was curious and interested in many things, especially current world events and he was a devoted NPR listener. And music--he loved music. He liked nothing better than to go for drives out in the country, listening to whatever came on the radio. And probably singing along, too!
He was fiercely independent, kind and generous. He would help anyone with anything they needed but rarely accepted help himself. He was smart, and intelligent. He could build anything, and he could fix anything.
Cary was preceded in death by his parents, all his aunts and uncles, and several cousins. He is survived by his sister, Colette Prikryl; his son, Corey Peacock; and many cousins and their families. He is also survived by his "Moss True Value Family": S.R. Moss, Brad and Belinda Moss, Tracy Michna, and numerous past and present employees.
To honor his life, a service will be held on February 9, 2024, at Providence Funeral Home, 807 Carlos Parker Blvd, Taylor, with visitation from 5pm-7pm and a memorial service at 7pm.
Memorial contributions may be made in Cary's name to the cause of your choice, or you may consider the memorial tree donations available from Providence Funeral Home. Cary would really have appreciated trees planted in his honor!
