Alice Norene Schernik

January 1, 1927 — February 10, 2018

Alice Schernik was an amazing woman who was kind, funny, and caring.  She was also a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.  She is preceded in death by her husband Benjamin H. Schernik.  She is survived by her daughters, Sandra K. Wright and Karen D. Seeman both of Taylor, TX.  She is also survived by her grandson Jon Seeman and wife Cindy of Hutto, TX, grandson Stephen Wright and wife Carrie of Nacogdoches, TX, and grandson Phillip Wright and Sharlene Martin of The Woodlands, TX.  She was the proud great-grandmother of Skylar and Chance Seeman, Isaiah and August Wright, Brodie and Addisyn Wright.

She was 91, Alice left our mortal world on February 10, 2018.  She was born Alice Norene Zucknick in Beyersville, TX, on January 1, 1927.  Alice was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Church.  She was married to Benjamin H. Schernik, on March 9, 1947.

She and Ben raised two beloved daughters, Sandra and Karen in Taylor, Texas.  She was an avid seamstress and sewed many of the items of clothing worn by Sandra and Karen.  Her three grandchildren, Jon, Stephen, and Phillip, have fond memories of time at her and “Grandaddy’s” home.  They spent carefree summer days playing, riding bikes, and reading at her house, all the while knowing that “Gran” would keep in touch with their daily “agenda” and cook them tasty meals and snacks throughout the day.  On school days she made sure that they had an excellent breakfast, shuffled them to and from school, and oversaw homework completion.  She played an enormous role in their lives, and they thrived in her care.

Alice also enjoyed being a major part of her great grandchildren’s lives.  They enjoyed visiting Gran at home and later at Falcon Ridge Nursing Care Center in Hutto, TX, often walking beside her as she rolled through the hallways in her wheelchair, watching the news with her, and updating her on their lives.

Despite her nagging Parkinson’s, she could commonly be found laughing with her family.  Fervently watching CNN (and complaining about “that old Trump”) and religiously making her journey to the lunch table in a timely fashion to dine with her crew: Idolla, Miriam, Betty, and other friends.  She loved spending time with her friends and her roommate, Ruth.  She may (or may not) have been known to sneak wine into her nursing home on occasion and she could sometimes be found balancing a walker and a beer at family gatherings.

She served as a great example to her family and was quick to stand up for what she thought was right.  With an outgoing, gregarious personality she could start a conversation with any stranger and make them feel at home.  She loved deeply.  She spoke directly.  Her sharp wit never faded.

The world is a better place because of Alice- it’s more honest, more consistent, and more loving.  Her impact on her family and friends will last forever.  She will be dearly missed.  Auf Wiedersehen, Gran.  Wir Lieben Dich (We love you).
