Of gentle soul, Frances Vrana, 96, passed away on October 18th, 2010. She was born on June 24, 1914 in Granger, Texas. Her parents were John and Frances Vrana of Catholic Czech heritage. She was one of twelve children. Hers was a childhood of work, but of great joy. As an adult, she worked primarily as a cook, nanny, and housekeeper. Frances always loved children. She was a second mother to many of her nieces and nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She was also a second mother to the children and grandchildren of her former employer, especially to the family of Carol and George Brown of Austin, Texas. Frances was a wonderful cook and never spared a dime to give candy, clothing, and treats to her family’s children. Frances took great pride in her appearance. She was lovely inside and out. Frances was a devotee of many games, especially dominoes, Taroky (a Czech card game), and canasta – she was a true competitor, and often a winner at all of these games. Daily, she would spend time crocheting baby blankets to be given away as treasured gifts. Over the last 10 years she enjoyed companionship and friendship with her neighbors at the North Loop Apartments in Austin. Aunt Frances “Ponchie” will be sorely missed.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents: John and Frances Vrana, and siblings: Frank Vrana, John Vrana, Stanley Vrana, Joseph Vrana, Elizabeth Vrana (passed away as an infant), Hattie Machac, Annie Motloch, Louis Vrana, Rudolph Vrana, Elizabeth Marek, and Mary Tubbs.
