Gilbert Schroeder

October 6, 1922 — July 16, 2010

Gilbert Martin Schroeder 87, the “Burger Meister” of the Thorndale, Texas has
gone into full retirement in his heavenly home. Gilbert passed away July 16,
2010, after a brief illness with his loving family by his side. Gilbert loved to
be active, engaging the public, and cooking his widely acclaimed “Schroeder
Burgers” at his business of 63 years, Schroeder’s Place in Thorndale, Texas.
Gilbert was born October 6, 1922, in the Hoxie community near Taylor, Texas, the
youngest son of Henry and Malinda Meiske Schroeder. He was baptized and
confirmed at Wuthrich Hill Lutheran Church. After serving his country in the
Army Air Corps during World War II he returned homeand fell in love with his
bride to be, Irene Niemtschk. They were married February 16, 1947, and started
their business together in Thorndale.
Gilbert was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, VFW Post 4009, and a founding
member of the Thorndale Volunteer Fire Department. He was also recognized by the
State House of Representatives for “Best Burgers In Williamson County”, received
a “Business Of The Year “ award from the Thorndale Chamber of Commerce, and was
once the subject of a John Kelso article in the Austin American Statesman.
Gilbert was well liked by the young and old alike and will be greatly missed by
his family, friends, and loyal customers.
Gilbert is survived by his wife of 63 years, Irene; son, Dennis Schroeder and
wife, Sallie of Hutto, Texas; son, Galen Schroeder and wife, Mary of
Pflugerville, Texas; daughter, Julaine and husband, Bill Grimm of Thorndale,
Texas; sister, Anna Lou and husband, Clarence Baca of Houston, Texas;
grandchildren, Trey, Walt and Scot Schroeder, Brandon and Cassie Grimm, and
numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two
brothers, Alvin and Edmund and three sisters, Elsie Kaiser, Alma Remmert, and
Frieda Hehman.

Pallbearers are Trey, Walt and Scot Schroeder, Brandon and Cassie Grimm, Kristin
and Michael Yancy, Russell, Mark and Troy Wernli. Honorary Pallbearers are
members of the Thorndale Volunteer Fire Department and VFW Post 4009.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 20, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Providence Funeral
at 807 Carlos Parker Blvd. in Taylor, Texas. Funeral Services will be Wednesday,
July21, at 10:00 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thorndale, Texas, with burial
at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made
to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
