Funeral services for Rueben James Sladek, 77, of Taylor are set for 10:30 am Friday, August 4, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Taylor. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm Thursday, August 3, at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor.
Rueben passed away Saturday, July 29, at his home a few months after being diagnosed with sarcoma cancer.
He was born to Lambert and Elsie Hurta Sladek of Taylor on November 7, 1939.
He graduated from Thrall High School in 1958 and then joined the Navy and served in the Vietnam War. After 4 ½ years in the Navy he was honorably discharged December 27, 1966. He then married Sherry Lynn Rohlack on January 28, 1967. The couple was blessed with two sons.
Rueben worked for Kerr-Ban Manufacturing in Taylor for 10 plus years before going to work for the Texas Department of Public Safety. He retired from DPS on October 31, 2001 after 20 years, 7 months of dedicated service to the State of Texas.
Rueben was a fantastic carpenter with an eye for detail in every project he did. He also enjoyed camping, gardening, traveling and spending time with his family. Recently he found a new favorite past time, his iPad, where he enjoyed facebook and playing games. He was an avid family history buff and traced his ancestry which resulted in many, many photograph albums.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sherry Lynn Rohlack; sons, Ronnie, and Jason Sladek; sister, Dorothy Sladek Pokorny Carter and husband, Arthur Carter; brothers Billy Sladek and wife, Linda, Howard Sladek and wife, Brenda;and brother-in-law, Willie Gore and wife, Louise. His nephews Raymond Pokorny, Charlie Pokorny and partner, Chris, Arthur Carter Jr. and fiancé, Lauren, Brandon Sladek and wife, Joy, Bradley Sladek and wife, Teresa, Ryan Sladek and wife, Courtni, Brian Gore, and wife, Debbie; Dennis Carter and wife, Judy; and niece, Megan Sladek Wheaton and husband, Brian.
Great-nephews are Kai Sladek, Case Sladek, Grant Carter, Christopher Gore, and David Gore. Great-neices, Keira Sladek, Addison Wheaton, Camille Sladek, Kalee Sue Gore, and Sarah Gore.
He was predeceased in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law, Nolan and Edna Rohlack, sister-in-law, Katie Gore, and nephew, Steven Gore.
Serving as pallbearers will be Raymond Pokorny, Brandon Sladek, Bradley Sladek, Arthur Carter, Jr., Brian Gore. Honorary pallbearers will Charlie Pokorny, Ryan Sladek, Brian Wheaton, Willie Gore, Eugene Sladek, Ralph Czimskey, Joe Flores and Jesse Luna.
The family would like to thank his family, friends, neighbors, Dr. Mark Stone, Dr. Stephen L. Brown, the staff at Austin Cancer Center, Pastor Paul Howe, members of Trinity Lutheran Church and Encompass Hospice for their love and support during Rueben’s battle with Sarcoma Cancer.
