Crawford James Daniel

Crawford James Daniel was born at home in Christine, Texas, on March 11, 1927. He graduated from Granger High School in 1943 and served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1945. He attended University of Texas at Austin and played the baritone in the Longhorn Band during his time there. He received his Bachelor of Arts with honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 1949 and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1951, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Dr. Daniel interned on Staten Island, New York, where he also spent time working for the United States Public Health Service at Ellis Island’s immigrant inspection station. Following his time in New York, he continued his work for the Public Health Service by spending a year with the Lakota Sioux tribe at the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He then returned to Texas and began working at Johns Clinic and Johns Community Hospital in 1954. He continued working for the clinic (which later became Scott & White Johns Clinic) and the hospital until December 1999. Following his retirement, he continued working on an interim basis for Scott & White for nine more years.

Dr. Daniel was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Taylor and was a leader in the Taylor community for many years. He served on the Taylor ISD School Board for three terms, served as president of the Taylor Housing Authority, and also served on the Johns Community Hospital Board for many years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Crawford Jackson Daniel and Lefa Ball Daniel, his sister Lillie Marie Daniel Saunders and her husband John Saunders.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gayle Guyton Daniel; his daughter Debbie Daniel Svadlenak and husband Steve of Austin; his daughter Dana Daniel Wilkes and husband Bo of Austin; and his son David Scott Daniel and wife Alli of San Antonio. He is also survived by his six grandchildren: Nathan Svadlenak of Santa Barbara, California; Jeff Svadlenak and his wife Leah of Cedar Park; Deuce and Andra Daniel of San Antonio; and Drake and Duncan Wilkes of Austin. In addition, he is survived by two great grandchildren: Michael and Ruth Svadlenak of Cedar Park.

Serving as pallbearers will be Bryan Saunders, Kelly Spiller, Jeff Svadlenak, Nathan Svadlenak, Curt Swenson, and Wilbert Vorwerk.

Visitation will be held from 6-8”00 P.M. on Monday, September 19, 2016 at Providence Funeral Home

Celebration of Life Services will take place at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Taylor, Texas with burial to follow at Taylor City Cemetery.

Memorials to honor Dr. Daniel may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
