Joanne P Spellings

May 17, 1936 — August 20, 2016

Joanne Margjorie Proffer Spellings, 80 years old, Hutto, TX passed to be with her loved ones who preceded her in death. She had been dealing with Rheumatoid Arthritis and the effects for over 65 years.

Joanne was the oldest of five children born to Hiram and Esther Proffer. She was born in Flint, Michigan. “Josie” as one her nieces nicknamed her, held much of the responsibility for her siblings during their upbringing. She married George E. Spellings in 1959. Shortly after marriage, George accepted a position in Florence Alabama with Ford Motor Company. They welcomed Debra Reyna, Myron Taylor (Crawdad d: 1978) and Tracy Alan. Her late 20’s and 30’s were focused on raising three children. In the early 70’s Joanne moved the family to Austin, Texas and about 4 years later to Coupland, TX.

After working several jobs, she chose to achieve a lifelong goal of being a nurse. She gained admission to Temple Junior College’s Licensed Vocational Nursing program and graduated. Upon graduation, she worked with severely handicapped residents in a long term care facility. She loved the residents and treated them with respect and dignity.

After several years of nursing, Josie chose to pursue a career in Real Estate. She secured her license and practiced in the local area for over 20 years before retiring.

She is survived by her two children, Debra and her husband Kyle Humphries, Tracy and his wife Sonya and her precious grandchildren Jordon, Emma, Sarah, Maggie, Luke and Levi. Her sister, Phyllis (husband Tom) Petrus, Jannett (husband Ken) Nelson, and her brother, Ken (wife Dana) Proffer, and many nieces and nephews in Texas and Michigan. We will miss our Josie; she was determined, independent and kind. We trust she’s free of her crippled body and enjoying the company of her son Crawdad and brother Larry.

There will be a visitation Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Providence Funeral Home, Taylor TX from 5pm-8pm. As Josie wished there will not be a formal funeral service. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Williamson County Animal Shelter in her name.
