Marvin John Holubec, 92, of Taylor, beloved father and grandfather, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2016. He was born in Coupland, Texas on May 13, 1924 to John and Annie (Slovacek) Holubec.
Marvin’s school days began at the Pear Valley country school near Coupland. He completed school in Circleville, Texas in 1941 and helped his father on the farm until 1943.
In March of 1943, Marvin enlisted in the United States Navy and was a proud veteran of World War II where he fought in both the European and Japanese theaters. He served in the Navy nearly three years, receiving an honorable discharge in January of 1946, achieving the rank of Motor Machinist Mate 2nd class. During his tour he crossed the Equator and the International Date Line twice and he served in many locations across the globe including North Africa, Italy, France, Guadalcanal, the Philippines, Japan, and Hong Kong.
Upon returning to Taylor, Marvin went to work for Scarbrough and Harkins Coin Machine Company where he remained for five years. He then went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a lineman where he worked for two and a half years. Then in November of 1953 he joined the Taylor Police Department as a patrolman in the traffic division. And a few short months later Marvin married Evelyn Hodon in the Czech Moravian Brethren Church on February 10, 1954 and together they had two sons. Five years after joining the Taylor Police Department he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and was second in command of the Taylor Police Force. In 1962, while still working at the Taylor Police Department, he was offered an opportunity to manage the Blazilmar Hotel and eight years later, he and his wife Evelyn purchased the operation and site from B.F. Weinberg of Kansas City, owner since 1944. Eventually, Marvin sold the Blazilmar and went to work for the Williamson County Sheriffs’ Department as bailiff for then District Judge John Carter. He retired from Williamson County Sheriffs’ Department in December of 1992.
On December 30, 1977, he married Catherine Kasparek Walker. Together they were blessed with 33 years of marriage until her death on March 13, 2011. Marvin was a member of the Taylor Brethren Church. He enjoyed listening and dancing to Czech music with his wife Catherine and spending time with his granddaughters. He enjoyed playing dominoes, riding bikes, and fishing. He also enjoyed sharing stories of his time in World War II and reminiscing about his childhood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Catherine Holubec, one brother Joe Holubec, and two sisters-in-law, Shirley Holubec and Maxine Holubec. He is survived by his two sons, Gary Holubec of Nevada and Daniel Holubec of San Antonio. He is also survived by his brother Alvin Holubec of Taylor. Also, three grandchildren, Scott Blanchard of Taylor, Kristen Holubec and husband Robert of Austin, and Kimberly Holubec and husband Isaac of Maryland; and two great-granddaughters McKenzie and Madison Cook of Maryland. Also, one niece, Saundra Holubec of Cedar Park; and two nephews Anthony Holubec and wife, Paula of Austin; and Joe Allen Holubec, Jr. of Taylor; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at the Taylor Brethren Church, 710 Sloan Street, Taylor on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at 10:00 AM. Reverend James Hejl will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the Taylor Brethren Church, 710 Sloan Street, Taylor, Texas 76574.
