Hallie Stream (Gregg) Streit, age 91, of Coupland, went to her eternal home July 27, 2016. Hallie was born, January 18, 1925, in Sandy Spring, Maryland, to Norman and Lucy (Tapp) Gregg. She was baptized June 7, 1925 at Brookeville Methodist Church.
Hallie was raised on a dairy farm in Maryland. As a young girl, she would wake up early each morning to milk cows and deliver fresh milk to the community. In 1945, she became a member of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps in Baltimore, MD. Hallie met Alfred while he was on military leave, touring Arlington Cemetery, and it was love at first sight. She then made the brave decision to move to Texas with Alfred. On August 4, 1946, they were united in marriage at St. Peter’s Church of Coupland and were married for 64 years. Alfred often said, “the most wonderful thing I ever heard Hallie say was, I do!”
After moving to Texas, the happy couple started a family; she cherished her family more than anything. Later, after her children were grown, Hallie became Gram to her grandchildren; Gram was a one of a kind grandma. She made the best chocolate chip cookies, and always kept a batch in the freezer for the grandkids. Her homemade bread was also a favorite of everyone. Gram also loved tending to her vegetable and flower gardens. She was happiest with a hoe in her hand tackling the weeds. Some of her favorite hobbies were reading, sewing, crocheting, and writing letters to her beloved sister, Peggy. Gram and Papa spent many happy days traveling and camping around the United States. The best times were taking the grandkids camping to the lake during the summers. They always looked forward to that.
During her life, Hallie worked at Taylor High School for 15 years as an aid. She was a faithful member of St. Peter’s Church of Coupland since 1947, where she served on many committees and was a member of the Ladies Aid. She was also the church librarian for many years, always willing to help the children with their book selection.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Alfred, her brothers, James and Billy; son-in-law, Terry Adkisson; brother/sister-in laws, Bernie Gelak, Hugo and Lydia Beyer, and Willie and Alice Guenther. She is survived by four children, Barbara Adkisson of Jewett, Jeanne Taylor (John) and Robert Streit (Doreen) of Coupland, and Roger Streit of Houston. Seven grandchildren, Kurt Taylor (Jessica), Heath Taylor (Susan), Clint Adkisson, LeAnn Hooper (Rodney), Darren Streit (Tessa), Jill Streit, and Devin Streit. Also, ten great-grandchildren, Paige and Colby Taylor, Callie and Terra Adkisson, Tinsley, Isadora and Gunneridge Streit, Karley and Katelynn Taylor, and Caden Hooper. Also surviving is her sister in Maryland, Peggy Gelak.
