Edward A. Neal, Sr., formerly of Austin, Texas died at the age of 80 while residing in Rosanky, Texas since 1997.
Edward earned a Bachelors and a Master’s Degree in Education at Texas State University. After acquiring his degrees, Edward began his career of 41 years of devoted service to the Del Valle Independent School District and the Del Valle community. Edward began his work in Del Valle ISD in 1957 as a teacher of mathematics and bookkeeping to Del Valle and Bergstrom Air Force students. In 1971 Edward was named Superintendent and stayed as Superintendent until he retired in 1997. Under his leadership the district developed a solid relationship with Bergstrom Air Force Base. Working closely with other government entities, Edward guided the district as it grew from 1,000 to more than 5,000 students. Edward successfully passed and administered two bond referendums and completed seven major construction projects as school campuses were added. In 1994 Edward negotiated the sale of four district campuses to the City of Austin to relocate them away from the runway of the new airport after the closure of Bergstrom Air Force Base.
With Edward focusing on educational excellence and implementing many innovative programs, the district achieved awards such as three National Blue Ribbon Schools, exemplary ratings from Texas Education Agency and Austin Quality Awards.
During his tenure as superintendent of Del Valle, Edward presented over 3,000 high school diplomas. It was his delight to work with the children of Del Valle and to serve with 27 excellent school board members.
Edward was an active member of Lions Club, Travis County Educational Association, Knights of Columbus, K.J.Z.T. and Parish Councils. Edward served as Sunday School Assistant and Eucharist Minister.
