Glenn Roy Widmer, 77, went to his heavenly home on January 15, 2016.
Glenn was born to the late Edwin and Frieda Widmer, in Taylor, TX at Wedemeyer Hospital on December 16, 1938. He was confirmed in the Lutheran church and followed through with believer’s baptism at First Baptist Church Taylor in 1960. As a child and adolescent, Glenn helped with the family farm, which developed into a life long passion.
Glenn later served in the Texas National Guard and the United States Army. He was activated during the Berlin Crisis. In 1959, Glenn went to work at the Texas Highway Department and retired 35 years later. After retirement from the Texas Highway Department, Glenn worked in the auto parts industry, delivered medication for Schwenker Pharmacy, as well as maintaining many yards in and around the Taylor area.
He was a very passionate supporter of the football programs of Baylor University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. He also attended numerous Duck and Hippo football games to support his sons no matter their role on the team.
Glenn was blessed with a loving, supportive family. He married his best friend, Reba Joyce Stephens, on November 7, 1959 in Taylor, TX at First Baptist Church. Glenn helped raise his three sons with a godly example of love, respect, and service to others. He taught them hard work, how to have a caring home, as well as a love for football.
Glenn was a man of few words but a servant at heart. He was kind and soft-spoken, and always had time to help anyone in need. Glenn served as a deacon at First Baptist Church Taylor for many years as well as served in the youth ministry and radio ministry. He served on a planning committee to plant the Primeria Iglesia Bautista in Taylor, Texas. Although he will be dearly missed, his family will rejoice that he is spending eternity with his Savior.
Glenn is survived by his wife of 56 years, Reba; his sister Betty Jo Krienke and husband Robert of Waco, Texas; his sons, Ricky and wife Jennifer of Franklin, Tennessee, Chad and his wife Kelli of Belton, Texas, and Kevin and wife Katie of Taylor, Texas; his grandchildren Shari Babb and husband Kyle Babb, Rebecca Widmer, Eric Widmer, and Landon Widmer; and his great granddaughter Charlotte Babb as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Frieda Widmer, his stepfather, Walter Wernecke, and his granddaughter, Ginny Widmer.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Providence Funeral Home from 6pm-8pm. A Celebration of Life service will be on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at First Baptist Church Taylor at 10am.
Pall Bearers for the service will be Tim Berg, Matt Parsons, Todd Butts, Thomas Martinez, Steve McLemore, Bobby Lalla, Dennis Svatek, and Michael Herrera. Honorary pallbearers will the deacons of First
Baptist Church. The family asks in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the building fund at First Baptist Church Taylor.
