Helen Irene Krueger Blackman

November 1, 1928 — September 2, 2015

Helen Irene Krueger Blackman passed away on September 2, 2015 at the age of 86. She was born on November 1, 1928 in Taylor, Texas and graduated from Hutto High School in May of 1946. She is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Darrell (Sam) Blackman.

Helen was a very creative person who loved to sew and was a fantastic cook. Always the life of the party, she was a passionate storyteller and dressed fabulously even to go to the grocery store. She had a gift for entertaining and was always willing to open her house to gatherings with friends and family. Helen would never let you say “no thank you” to her offer of a second serving, therefore you never left her home hungry! We will miss the color and enthusiasm Helen brought to everyday life.

As a young woman, Helen worked as a secretary for many years with the State of Texas in various positions such as the House of Representatives and the General Land Office. The majority of her career was with the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. She worked at Travis State School, Austin State School, and Lubbock State School, retiring after 30 years with the state.

Following retirement, Helen and Sam moved back to Hutto and Helen got busy! She had a knack for collecting and created a small antique business out of their home called B’s House. She was also a founding member of the Hutto Extension Homemakers Club, serving as its first president.

Helen enjoyed many years of travel with Sam, friends, and family. These travels have provided us with special photos, stories, and memories that we will treasure forever.

Helen always was filled with the desire to help people in need and we trust she is now at peace with our Lord and with Sam again.

Helen is survived by her daughter Suzan (and husband Jay Browning), and her grandchildren Taylor Browning, Jamie Browning, and Trey Blackman. Her son Darrell predeceased her.

A reception will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 1:00 P.M., followed by a Service at 2:00 P.M. at Palm Valley Lutheran Church, 2500 E. Palm Valley Blvd, Round Rock, Texas 78665. Graveside service will be at 3:00 P.M. at the Hutto Cemetery.
