Stephen Douglas Smith

Stephen Douglas Smith, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 56, peacefully at home surrounded by his family on July 3, 2015. He was born in Bastrop, LA to Nell L. Brewster and James R. Smith.

Steve was an outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting. He loved his family and was especially proud of his four grandsons. He loved his pet rat terrier Baby Girl who was never far from his side. He was strong in his faith and loved his God. He had a rebel soul and was proud of his southern heritage. Steve was known for his sense of humor and was considered the jokester of the family. He was the life of the party and family gatherings will never be the same without him.

Steve is survived by his wife of 36 years Patricia Smith of Thorndale, daughters Rebecca Stogner of Thorndale and Melissa Smith also of Thorndale. He leaves behind four grandsons Steven M. Stogner, Timothy M. Stogner, Christopher D. Fogle, and Lane A. Herzog. Sisters Betty R. Unnasch of Thorndale, Carol Lightsey and husband of Farmersville, LA, and Sandra Webster and husband of Dimebox, TX, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family Melissa Nellis and children Megan and Michael Nellis.

He is preceded in death by his mother Nell L. Brewster-Poe, his father James R. Smith, his brother James D. Smith, niece Glenda K. Marek, and close family friend Jessie Nellis.

Funeral services will be held at Providence Funeral Home on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 9:00 A.M. at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor, TX. Grave side service will follow at the Thorndale City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Steven M. Stogner, Christopher D. Fogle, Timothy M. Stogner, Lane A. Herzog, Joe Deary Jr., Jeremy Smith, Michael Nellis, and Russell Milam. Honorary pallbearers are James D. Smith, Phillip Templain, Joseph Deary Sr, Joshua Deary, Tyrone McGill, Brett Boothe, Charlie Lightsey, Rusty Milam, Jessie Nellis, Mike Lightsey, and Mark Lightsey.
