Gladys Lumbley

September 30, 1919 — April 15, 2015

Gladys Mary Tiemann Lumbley passed away peacefully on April 15, 2015, at the age of 95 at Brenham Rest Home in Brenham, Texas, where she had resided for several years.

Gladys was born in Brenham on September 30, 1919. She was the first of three children born to William F. Tiemann, Sr. and Emma M. Tiemann who moved the family to Taylor in 1935. Gladys graduated from Taylor High School as a member of the Class of 1937. As a teenager, she spent many fond days with her two dearest friends Mamie Meyer (Danek) and Mildred Bozarth (Hicks/Simank) swimming in the San Gabriel River and pursuing other teenage activities.

After high school, Gladys attended Durham Business College in Austin. She married J. I. Lumbley, Jr., of Axtell, Texas, in 1942 and thoroughly enjoyed being an Army Air Corps officer’s wife, traveling across the Southwest during World War II. During her subsequent life as a single mother, Gladys gave tirelessly of herself to her paramount mission of raising and educating her two sons Michael Zane and Leland Jack and doted on her grandchildren. She also enjoyed two lengthy careers, one with the Internal Revenue Service and the other with the Texas Employment Commission, now known as the Texas Workforce Commission, eventually retiring from both to travel with friends and devote time to family.

She was preceded in death by her parents William and Emma Tiemann and her brothers William F. (Bubba) Tiemann, Jr. of Taylor and Arthur R. Tiemann of Austin. Gladys is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Michael Zane and Debra Lumbley of Brenham and Leland Jack and Mary Lumbley of Columbus, Ohio, her grandchildren Michael Zane Lumbley, Jr. of Marble Falls, Joshua Lee (and wife Katie) Lumbley of Columbus, Ohio, Justin Ian Lumbley of Monticello, Florida, and Tara Lumbley (and husband Billy) Kang of Cairo, Georgia, five great-grandchildren Keisha Renee Gutierrez of Kingsland, Dominique Lumbley of Hillsboro, Emma Jane and Arden Leigh Lumbley of Columbus, Ohio, and Andrew Zane Kang of Cairo, Georgia, and four great-great-grandchildren.

A visitation with family is scheduled for 3:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. Interment will take place at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 20, at Taylor City Cemetery. Donations to the American Cancer Society, the Wounded Warrior Project or the Independence Fund in lieu of flowers will be appreciated by the family.
