Joyce P Simmons

Joyce P. Simmons of Temple, TX passed away peacefully at Scott & White Hospital Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the age of 86.

Joyce was born October 3, 1928 in Thrall, TX to Joe and Lydia Pavelka. Joyce graduated from Thrall High School and went on to study nursing at Spahn School of Nursing in Corpus Christi, earning her LVN credential.

In 1946, Joyce married Ira H. Simmons, a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy and they traveled to many places around the globe during his career. They settled in Temple, TX where Joyce provided compassionate nursing care for over 31 years at Scott & White Hospital; the last 23 years she spent nursing in the Ophthalmology department.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Lydia Pavelka, her husband Ira Simmons, and her sister Irene Beard. Joyce is survived by her son Tim Simmons and daughter-in-law Irene Simmons, granddaughter Kristin Simmons, sister Dorothy Newman, long time devoted friend David Phillips and his children, numerous nephews, nieces, as well as great nephews and nieces.

Arrangements are made through Providence Funeral Home in Taylor, TX. Visitation will be Monday, November 3 from 6-8 PM and graveside burial services at the Taylor City Cemetery on Tuesday, November 4 at 10 AM. Honorary pallbearers are: Gary Maruska, John Maruska, Steve Hodges, Dave Phillips Jr., Tod Phillips, Mark Phillips, James Phillips, and Moody Barrett.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to a charity of your choice in Joyce’s memory.
