Shannon Bubby Mcmakin

Shannon “Bubby” McMakin passed away peacefully on April 24, 2014 from the complications of a stroke. Bubby was born in Taylor on December 5, 1936, to Shannon and Esther (Dishberger) McMakin and graduated from Taylor High School in 1955. He married Dorothy Zurovetz on April 3, 1965. They were blessed with two beautiful children. His enjoyment came from eating great food with his classmates and friends, sharing emails, and watching his grandkids play ball.

Bubby served in the Army National Guard for over 20 years, retiring as a First Sergeant. He then entered the real estate business, first as a Realtor and then as a Broker. He founded McMakin & Associates Real Estate and ran the business for almost 40 years.

Bubby was very active in the Taylor community. He served on the Taylor ISD School Board for 20 years, including several years as Board President. He was a member of the Taylor Kiwanis Club for over 50 years. He was a proud member of the Taylor Alumni Association and the Duck Hall of Fame (Once a Duck, Always a Duck!) . He was a generous supporter of St. Mary’s Catholic School and many other local charities. His company annually sponsored baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer teams. He was named by the Taylor Chamber of Commerce as the Citizen of the Year in 1996.

Bubby is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents, Shannon and Esther; and his sister, Margie Schooley. He is survived by his daughter, Shannon Renee Boles, and husband Jarrell, of Taylor; son, Chad McMakin, and wife Rebecca, of Colorado Springs, CO; brother-in-law Bill Schooley; his sister-in-law, Betty Jean Machalicek; and grandchildren, Jake, Abby and Trey Boles, and Gavin and Liam McMakin.

Known to all as Bubby and to family as Papa, he will always be remembered for his quick wit, outgoing personality, easy-going nature and playful sense of humor. He was a blessing to his family, an icon of the Community and a friend to all. He never met a stranger, and he will be truly missed and fondly remembered.

The family would like to thank the dedicated doctors and nurses of the Intensive Care Unit at Seton Williamson in Round Rock, and the dedicated waitresses of Logan’s Roadhouse, Red Lobster, Cotton Patch, Sirloin Stockade, El Corral Lozano, and 620 Café in Round Rock.

Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 P.M., Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Providence Funeral Home Chapel.

Celebration of Life Services will be 10:00 A.M., Monday, April 28, 2014 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial to follow at the Taylor City Cemetery.
