Pearl “Nannie” Newman was born June 24, 1922 in Arkansas Community near Thorndale to Oscar and Adele (Schultz) Melde. She was baptized on July 9, 1922 and confirmed on April 2, 1936 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thorndale. She married Frank “Pa” Newman Jr. on May 7, 1940 and they spent 61 wonderful years together. Pearl was a founding and lifelong member of the Thorndale VFW Auxiliary, Post #4009. For many years, you could find her behind the counter at Butt’s Dry Goods in Thorndale where (according to Pa) she spent more money than she made. In the evenings, you could find them cruising (very slowly) around town taking in the sights. Pearl had a terrific sense of humor, a contagious laugh, and a smile that would light up the room. There was nothing she enjoyed more than spending time with her family and hosting family get-togethers.
Pearl was preceded in death by her beloved husband Frank of 61 years, her parents, a daughter Rita Jane Becker and a son-in-law Leon Barron.
She is survived by her daughter Judy Brown of Thorndale; sister Helen Ferrell and husband George of Charleston, West Virginia; grandchildren Jeff Barron and wife Cheryl and Marla Davis and husband Chris all of Thorndale, Randa Becker and husband Koen of Belgium and Russell Becker and wife DeLea of Austin; great-grandchildren Kassie Bolton and husband Michael of Pasadena, Mallory Keeling and husband Chad of Bay City, Jacob Barron and Logan Davis of Thorndale, Hiatt and Crockett Becker of Austin, and Lars and Lene Van Den Heuvel of Belgium; great-great-grandchildren Caleb Keeling of Bay City; sisters-in-law Margie Olbrich and Frances Hilton of Thorndale.
Pallbearers are James Lee Hilton, Frankie Hilton, Charles Olbrich, Les Goerdel, Jeff Muegge and Kevin Barchenger.
Honorary Pallbearers are Newton Butts, Max Thiele, Bob Hegar, Elmore Lincoln, Pat Kratz and the members of the Thorndale VFW Post #4009 Auxiliary.
Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church in Thorndale.
