Celebration of Life Services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at Providence Funeral Home with Rev. Walter Miller officiating. Burial will follow at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Pflugerville.
Deane was baptized on June 26, 1921 in the Lutheran Church in Runge, Texas, and was confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pflugerville on April 14, 1935. She graduated from Pflugerville High School in 1937 and attended the University of Texas. Deane married Melvin Pfennig on April 28, 1940 and they shared 58 wonderful years together.
Deane began her career at Southwestern Bell Telephone in Austin. When Deane and Melvin, a pharmacist, moved to Taylor, she began working in pharmacy, a career that spanned 56 years. After working several years at Brunner & Williams Drug Store in Taylor, Deane and Melvin opened their own independent pharmacy, Pfennig Pharmacy, in 1963.It was quite a challenge but one they both loved. Melvin was the pharmacist while Deane was the expert in customer service. Together they built a thriving pharmacy business, one that survives today due greatly to their diligent mentoring of employees. They insisted that the customer always come first. This was a standard Deane not only exemplified but also expected from her employees. Deane considered the “girls” at the pharmacy part of her family and loved them all. Deane and Melvin sold the pharmacy in 1981 to Johnette DeLeon and Connie Carlson, but continued to play an active role. Deane worked 10 hour days at the pharmacy until her retirement at age 80 in 2003.
Deane enjoyed actively participating in various civic clubs and organizations, among which were the Women’s Study Club and New Century Club. She was a mentor at Pasemann Elementary School, as well as a faithful and active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Taylor.
Deane Was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Pfennig (1998), her brothers, Norman and Fred Meyer, her sisters, Lillian Esse, Viola Ohlenbusch Wiederanders, and Henrietta Pearson.
Deane is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and by dear friends, Verlyn Huber and Johnette DeLeon. Special thanks goes to Janie Whitley, who cared for her faithfully and lovingly.
Pallbearers will be David Pearson, Conrad DeLeon, Don Pfennig, Billy Carlson, Edwin Marek, and Patrick McSorley.
