Hugh Franklin Caffey, Jr., 84, a lifelong resident of Thorndale was taken home by his Loving Savior on Thursday, March 21, 2013 in a Temple hospital.
Junior, as he was commonly known, was born May 23, 1928 to Hugh and Ethel (Jackson) Caffey. Following the untimely death of his mother, Junior was blessed to have stepmother Hattie (Tucker) Caffey.
Raised during the Great Depression, Junior quickly learned to live within his means and be thankful for everything the Lord provided. After graduating from Thorndale High School in 1945, he worked at a local gasoline station for his future in-laws Alfred E. and Minnie (Moerbe) Becker. On January 9, 1953, Junior married the love of his life Peggy A. Becker.
For 32 years, Junior felt blessed to have a job at the Alcoa plant storeroom. With only a high school diploma but an undeniable work ethic, Junior rose through the ranks from clerk to superintendent before his retirement in 1983.
Junior was actively involved in community service during his working and retirement years including terms as City Councilman and Mayor of Thorndale. Also worthy to note are his stints as youth baseball coach, bus driver on countless school field trips, and service on the church council at St. John Lutheran.
Mr. Caffey was preceded in death by his father, mother, stepmother, father-in-law and mother-in-law.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Peggy; daughter Connie and husband Mike of Thorndale; and son, Dale and wife Shelley of Hewitt. Other survivors include grandchildren Michael Davenport, Johnny Davenport, Paul Davenport, Ryan Davenport, Chelsey (Davenport) Madsen, Jared Caffey and Erica Caffey.
Pallbearers were Ryan Madsen, Neil Weise, Floyd Zuehlke Jr., Meredith Conoley, Ryan Davenport and Jared Caffey.
