Erwin (Red) Bachmayer

April 15, 1925 — March 12, 2012

Erwin (Red) Bachmayer died peacefully at home on March 12, 2012. He was born in Beyersville on April 15, 1925 to Charlie and Martha (Roehr) Bachmayer.

Erwin attended Beyersville grade school and then graduated from Taylor High School in 1942 where he played for the Taylor Duck football team which won the Regional Championship. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He trained at the University of Missouri to be a flight engineer on B-29’s. He was completing his last weeks of training when the atomic bomb was dropped and WWII ended.

Throughout his early years, he worked for his grandfather and his dad in their cotton gin in Beyersville. He and his brother, Ralph, later owned and operated the Beyersville gin. He also did hay bailing, grass planting, bulldozer work, and laid many rural water lines in his community.

In 1969, Erwin was severely burned while working on a grass planting project in Ft. Worth. Erwin always worked long hours, and even though he spent over a month at the Parkland Burn Center, he was soon back to work.

Erwin was married February 4, 1947 to Elsie Beyer. Last month, they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. He and Elsie enjoyed travelling to Las Vegas. They fondly remembered their travels across the U.S. on Amtrak.

Erwin was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he was a Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. He was on the board of directors for the Noack Water Supply for over 30 years. He was a member of the Taylor American Legion for over 50 years.

Erwin is survived by his wife Elsie (Beyer) Bachmayer, son Carrol Bachmayer and wife Carol, daughter Joan Maxfield, and brother Ralph Bachmayer. His grandchildren are Ricky Bachmayer and friend Lavon Richey, Crystal Bachmayer and friend D.J. Perry, Michael Hoffman, and Carla Hoffman. Erwin is also survived by step-grandchildren, Debbie Kovar and husband Pat, Mike McCully and wife Becky, T.J. McCully and wife Jennifer and seven step-great grandchildren.

Erwin was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Joyce Bortz, and his brother Raymond Bachmayer.

Visitation for Erwin will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at 6:00 P.M., Rosary at 7:00 P.M., at Providence Funeral Home, 807 Carlos Parker Blvd., Taylor, Texas and funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, March 15, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Taylor, Texas with Msgr. Louis Wozniak officiating.

Pallbearers are Eric (Ricky) Bachmayer, Michael Hoffman, David Sefcik, Harlan Bachmayer, Todd Bachmayer, and Harold Fischer. Honorary pallbearers are Carla Hoffman and Crystal Bachmayer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clerical Endowment Fund at St. Mary’s or the charity of the donor’s choice.
