Geraldine Laverne Walker, age 94, of Hutto, TX, formerly of Taylor, TX died September 28, 2011.
She was born May 29, 1917 in Santa Barbara, CA to Ora and Clarence Gilstrap and spent her early years in the Comanche, TX area. On January 28, 1939 she married Lewin Leonard Walker who worked on the railroad and was transferred to Taylor with the Missouri Kansas Texas railroad in 1947. The same year she opened her own business, Walker’s Kindergarten and Daycare Center, and raised a lot of little Taylorites. She had as many as 175 kids at one time in the daycare. She ran this business for over 30 years. During this time, she received many acclamations but the most memorable was receiving Taylor’s Outstanding Business Woman of the Year award in 1955. After closing her business in 1976, she felt a higher calling and pioneered a church (Taylor Church of God) and ministered for almost 20 years. She always had a kind heart toward others. Her motto was “Others” and devoted a lot of her time to helping people in need. She has fought a lengthy battle with breast cancer, but is now no longer in pain and having the time of her life enjoying her reward.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 1/2 years, Lewin Leonard Walker; daughter Patricia Moehnke; 2 sisters Velma Newsome-Hart and baby sister Gilstrap; and 1 brother Jake.
She is survived by son Richard J. Walker and wife Lynn, and their children Nathanael and Michaelyn; nephew Lynn Newsome and wife Romelda of Boise, Idaho; Patricia’s 4 daughters and their children; and also many friends that she loved dearly.
Visitation will be 5:00-6:00 P.M. Sunday, October 2, 2011 at Providence Funeral Home.
Celebration of Life Services will be 6:00 P.M. Sunday, October 2, 2011 at Providence Funeral Home. Burial will be at Sardis Cemetery, Haase, TX.
