Laura Marie Davis

Laura Marie Davis, 87, of Davilla, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2011 at her residence after a brief illness. Services are scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Davilla Baptist Church with Brother David Cox and Brother Billy Ray Crow officiating. Burial will follow at Davilla Cemetery.

The family will receive visitors 6:00-8:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Providence Funeral Home.

Laura was born November 28, 1923 in the Blackjack Community near Rockdale, Texas to Joseph Raymond Cummings and Rebecca Jane (Shepherd) Cummings. As a young girl she moved to the Davilla area where she resided until her passing. Laura was a member of the first graduating class of Sharp High School in 1941. She married Lester “Peck” Davis on July 12, 1941. She was an active member of Davilla Baptist Church and managed the Davilla Community Center. Laura enjoyed growing flowers, piecing and hand quilting quilts, and playing canasta, dominoes and bingo. She loved spending time with and bragging about her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Laura was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Carolyn Sue Mummey Ashworth; son, James Lester Davis; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; two sisters; and four brothers. Survivors include two sons, Lucian Wayne of Davilla and Gregory Brooks and wife Trish of Troy; four daughters, Patricia Ann Cargill and husband J.D.; Esther Marie Lovelace and husband Jim; and Melanie Grace Davey and husband Bernard, all of Davilla; and Cynthia Kaye Davis of Round Rock; one sister, Grace Walker of Blanco; 22 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers for Mrs. Davis will be her grandsons, Duane Mummey, Bo Davis, Kenneth Davis, Jamie Cargill, Jason Cargill, Justin Cargill, Brooks Davis and Chris Asbury. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Davey, Artie White, Jimmy Ford, David Walker, Kem Cummings, Rodney Cummings, John Willingham, Donnie Davis, Jim Davis, Stuart Wood and David Lee Cummings.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Davilla Community Center.
