Darrell will be remembered fondly for many things, but mostly for his goodness, his contentment and his patience. He was never known to have said an unkind word or done an unkind deed.
He was born and raised in the Type community, and after living briefly near Elgin, he moved to his "home on the hilltop" near Beyersville which he considered his personal paradise. He died there the way he had lived all his life: at peace with himself, his God and the world.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Ollie Gustafson; a sister and brother-in-law, Mae Alice and Bill Welsh; brother-in-law John F. Herzer; and sister-in-law, Martha Palla.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Judie, his heart-adopted son Edward Gonzales and wife Tricia of San Antonio, and two grandchildren whom he adored, Chris and Katie Gonzales; brother-in-law John Stanford and wife Henrietta of Cedar Park; brother-in-law Frank Palla of Plano; sisters-in-law Linda Petterson of Minneapolis, Minn., Anna Herzer of Austin, Karen Krieg and husband Will of New Braunfels; 17 nieces and nephews; scores of cousins and other relatives; countless friends, and millions of people who crave just a fraction of the contentment and goodness that he exhibited daily.
He brought to the world a quiet presence. He leaves a loud silence.
